AHM Health insurance Review

AHM started out in Wollongong, NSW  nearly 40 years ago. It was eventually bought by Medibank Private in 2009. At the time of writing the health fund has around 500,000 members and the main two things that this health insurer prides itself on it is uncomplicated cover and its digital first service. AHM also offers health insurance policies trading as Kogan Health. 

AHM offer something that offer health insurers do not offer. You can choose a hospital cover on its own and you can choose a extras cover on its own too or you can choose a health cover that combines the two, both hospital and extras. In this article we will go through some of the health insurance policies that AHM offer.

AHM offer 9 hospital policies for the everyday Australian. Their health insurance policies start with the most basic one and that is the Lite Bronze Plus Hospital Cover. This health  insurance will cost you $18.95 per week and with this policy you get the bronze level cover along with Back, neck and spine, dental surgery and lung and chest services added on. AHM also will pay the benefits with all agreed hospital charges in a private hospital or in a shared or private room. If you are in a public hospital AHM will also pay all accommodation fees for a shared room and the benefits that go with a private room. However, you might still have to pay some out-of-pocket costs as a result of a medical gap for your doctors’ fees. In this policy you get covered for 21 hospital treatments and medical services such as brain and nervous system, ear nose and throat, joint reconstructions, diabetes management not including insulin pumps and many more. On this policy AHM pay restricted benefits for rehabilitation, palliative care and hospital psychiatric services. They will also pay all of your accommodation fees for your shared room in a public hospital. They also pay some of the benefits if you stay in a private hospital or in a private room in a public hospital, however you will have to pay a huge sum of out of pocket expenses if you are treated at a private hospital or stay in a private room in a public hospital. With the excess you can choose to pay $500 or $750 per person and up to a limit of $1500 for a family per year.

The next hospital insurance policy is the Deluxe silver Plus and it will cost you or your family $30.80. This policy is a great health insurance that gives you a great policy without the things that you do not necessarily need like pregnancy but you are covered for joint replacements, cataracts, dialysis for chronic kidney failure, insulin pumps and some sleep studies. On top of that you will get unlimited medically necessary ambulance and you will also pay no excess for dependents. In this policy you get hospital cover for 34 hospital services which includes pain management with a device, implantation of hearing devices podiatric surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery and the digestive system just to name a few. The only thing that is restricted in this insurance policy is hospital psychiatric services. in which the waiting period is two months. They will also pay the charges for a shared room in a public hospital, however they will only pay a select amount if you stay in a private hospital. On top of that you will have to pay a big chunk of out of pocket expenses if you are treated in a private hospital or stay in a private room in a public hospital.

In this policy AHM will not cover you for certain services such as pregnancy and birth, assisted reproductive services like IVF and weight loss surgery. With the excess you can choose to pay $500 or $750 per person and up to a limit of $1500 for a family per year.

The best available hospital health insurance policy is the Top Hospital Gold and is the top level of cover. It will cost you or your family $35.90 per week. With this policy you get the widest range of services which includes back neck and spine, cataracts, joint replacements and the heart and vascular system. This is the ultimate policy for your piece of mind, especially if you are planning on having kids because you will get access to the pregnancy and birth services too. On top of that you will also get disease management appliances and unlimited medically necessary emergency ambulance cover.

On this policy AHM will pay all agreed charges you might encounter in a partner private hospital in a shared or private room. They will also pay any charges for accommodation for a shared room and the benefits that go toward a private room. However you may still have to pay some out of pocket charges as a result of the medicare gap for your doctor’s fees. This policy gives you access to all 36 hospital cover options which include Gynaecology, pain management, dental surgery, pregnancy and birth, assisted reproductive services like IVF and many many more. The excess  for top hospital gold is set at $750. 

That covers all of AHM’s hospital cover insurance policys that they offer, now let us have a look at their extras policies.

AHM offer 7 different options when it comes to extras ranging from the most basic policy all the way to the most comprehensive extras policy.

Lets start with the most basic policy, the black 50 saver and this will cost you a miserly $2.90 per week. With this extras policy you get 50% back on included extras that are up to you annual limits and you get no gap dental check ups at selected dentists. You get 3 extras options in routine dental which has a annual limit of $400 per person and has a waiting period of 2 months, Physio, chiro and osteopathy and they have a waiting period of 2 months. Lastly you get emergency ambulance and the waiting period is only 1 day.

The next extras policy is the Black 70 extras cover. This will cost you $10.50 per week and you get 70% back on included extras up to your annual limit and also you get 100% back on optical for frames, prescription lenses and contact lenses. You get 7 extras options that include complex and major dental work, health improvement, optical, natural therapies and emergency ambulance.

Lastly is the Super extras policy. It will cost you $19.60 per week and you get unlimited routine dental cover and no 2 or 6 month waiting periods on selected extras. You get access to all 28 extras options and that includes travel and accommodation, post operative and medical aids, outpatient procedure room fees,  hearing aids, audiology and medical gases just to name a few. With this policy the longer you stay with AHM with this policy the more you get. Your annual limits for some extras services will increase after you have been with them for a number of years. 

So that is the seperate hospital and extras cover, now we will look at the combined packages that AHM offer.

AHM offer 5 combined Hospital and extras policies ranging from $17 a week all the way to $40.00 a week. The most basic combined policy is the Starter flexi basic hospital and extras policy and will cost you $17.50 per week. The basic hospital and extras for both singles and couples includes accident overide and limited medically necessary ambulance. On top of that you get a loyalty extras limit for all dental, osteo, physio and chiro and that goes up every 5 years so it is a good idea to stick with them.

The next combined package is the Classic flexi silver plus hospital and extras. It will cost you $33.55 per week and a $250 optical limit and also a flexi extras limit if you stay loyal along with heart and vascular, back, neck, and spine and plastic and re constructive surgery. On top of that you get rehab and palliative care included and you also get unlimited necessary ambulance and accident override and no excess for dependents. You also get an extras limit that goes up for every 5 years you stay loyal with AHM on selected services like osteo, physio and dental. You get access to 9 extras options which include optical, natural therapies, chiro, podiatry and complex dental. You get 32 hospital options too including palliative care, rehab, bone joint and muscle and sleep studies to name a few. The hospital access is set at $750 or $500.

The last combined hospital and extras cover is the deluxe flexi silver plus hospital and extras package and will cost you $40.50 per week. You get all these hospital services in joint replacements, cataracts, dialysis for kidney failure, insulin pumps and pain management with device. You get unlimited necessary ambulance, accident override and no excess for dependents, along with an extras limit that increases for every 5 years you stay with AHM and on top of that you also get a bonus $300 optical limit too.

You get access to all 10 extras options like optical, chiro, major dental and physio just to name a few. The hospital side of the package is great too as AHM pay the benefits that to go to helping pay all hospital charges for a shared or private room. In a public hospital they also pay all accommodation fees for both private and shared rooms, however you still might have to pay some out of pocket costs. You get access to all 34 hospital options too like sleep studies, pain management with devices, joint replacements and insulin pumps. So overall this is the most complete package they have to offer.
